A Bold Beginning
Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. is not just a name in history; he is a symbol of dreams—dreams that drive us to defy limits and strive for change. His iconic "I Have a Dream" speech sparked a movement that inspired millions to pursue their visions for a better world. Just like Dr. King, I have my own dream—a dream that is bold, deeply personal, and grounded in the belief that embracing the unknown can lead to extraordinary outcomes.
The Power of Dreams
Dreams are powerful motivators. They unite us and push us forward. In difficult times, dreams act as a guiding light, helping us identify our goals and reignite our passions.
For instance, according to a study by the University of California, individuals who set clear goals are 10 times more likely to achieve them than those who do not. Dreams help us break free from conformity and encourage us to explore our true potential. My own dream drives me to work hard every day, reminding me that I am committed to becoming the best version of myself.
The Courage to Dream Big
Dr. King often said, "Faith is taking the first step even when you don’t see the whole staircase.” The journey to our dreams requires courage and self-belief.
When I reflect on my experiences, I realize that society often encourages us to play it safe. For example, a survey from LinkedIn found that 41% of professionals feel stuck in their current jobs because of fear of failure. However, taking risks is essential. Just as Dr. King faced immense challenges in his fight for justice, I learned that confronting my fears head-on is key to moving forward.
Finding Your Own Voice
Every journey begins with finding your own voice. Each individual's story is distinct, and our paths reflect our personal goals. Embracing our voices means acknowledging our value in the world. This is one reason why I established my own platform, CHW Liberation Consulting, to help communities thrive. However, those driving the agenda often do not resemble us. There is a persistent cycle of creating pilot programs without genuine support, despite available funds, led by individuals who do not understand our communities. Few succeed in this endeavor. I observe meetings, commercials, and hear few success stories of people consistently achieving success in reducing infant mortality and heart diseases, just to name a few of the chronic conditions exacerbated by medicine that harms more than heals in our communities. What about exploring holistic healing for body, mind, and soul? Education and timing are crucial for a successful program, yet those teaching us to fail remain. We must gain trust, but we, who live in these communities, trust each other. When we fail, they fail; we must walk in their shoes and understand. True passion and purpose-driven individuals must be in positions to help those in need. We need a seat at the tables where decisions are made. Often, our ideas are taken and credited to others. If your idea was to create change in healthcare or reduce workforce turnover, what went wrong? There is a lack of quality and equity in the workplace, workforce, and educational training for real-life needs. I dreamed of a time when we could secure a position where everyone thrives together, where idea theft, change promotion, recognition, and equal pay are addressed. Despite a lack of formal education, the evidence of your life's work in creating change is undeniable. Today marks a new beginning. I awoke to the possibilities of this dream, understanding it takes more than a village. But I am ready to take one step, one client, and one training at a time.
Reflecting on my aspirations, I realize I want to uplift others. Just as Dr. King envisioned a society of equality, I strive to encourage those around me. Simple acts, like sharing helpful resources or offering words of encouragement, can ignite change within our community. For instance, a community initiative I participated in helped 200 young people develop career skills, proving the ripple effect of kindness and support.
The Journey of Self-Discovery
The path to realizing our dreams is often winding and filled with lessons. Much like Dr. King navigating through civil rights challenges, I have faced my own share of ups and downs.
Self-reflection is crucial. By analyzing my past experiences, I have gained insights into my motivations and goals. This understanding serves as a foundation for my forward momentum, enabling me to make informed choices that align with my dreams.
Embracing Failure
Failure, while challenging, is part of the journey toward our goals. Ending up on the wrong path can be discouraging, but each setback offers valuable lessons.
Dr. King encountered numerous challenges, yet he persevered. When I face difficulties, I remind myself that failure does not define me; it is a steppingstone for growth. When I struggled to find a new job, formed one-sided relationships, whether in family or friendships, or failed an exam last year, I used those experiences to reflect inwardly rather than blaming external factors. I examined the teams I would potentially work with before job interviews and noticed a lack of diversity, which, unless they are actively combating racism, reduced my chances of getting hired. This often happens in this state where racism is prevalent. I digress. I also studied harder and eventually excelled in later assessments.
Cultivating Resilience
Building resilience is essential in achieving our dreams. Dr. King displayed remarkable strength during trying times, and we must also focus on nurturing our endurance.
This resilience can be shaped through self-care practices, maintaining a positive outlook, and surrounding ourselves with encouraging people. A 2019 survey indicated that individuals with strong social support are 50% more likely to persevere through hardships. By prioritizing mental well-being and fostering supportive relationships, we can better handle challenges and adapt to changes along the way.
The Role of Community
Pursuing our dreams should not be a solitary endeavor. Communities play a critical role in shaping our aspirations and guiding us toward our goals. By sharing our visions, we tap into a collective strength that propels us forward.
Dr. King’s movement succeeded through collective resilience, motivating people to unite for a shared cause. Similarly, I’ve found that connecting with like-minded individuals strengthens our pursuits. For example, joining local networking groups has provided invaluable support and collaboration opportunities.
Celebrating Achievements
As we pursue our dreams, celebrating achievements—big and small—is essential. Recognizing milestones reinforces our commitment and highlights progress.
Every achievement, whether it's securing a new job or completing a project, deserves recognition. Celebrating these moments builds momentum and enhances our confidence. Studies indicate that recognizing success can boost motivation by over 30%. By appreciating our accomplishments, we motivate ourselves to continue progressing. Even if money is our primary motivator due to inflation outpacing stagnant wages, we must aspire to leave that job and let events unfold as they may. Sometimes, a simple thank you for working extensive overtime without proper compensation—despite the overrated term "salaried"—is lacking, as you are used and only acknowledged privately while your teammates receive public recognition for merely doing their jobs. You hear their names praised, but without your constant, high-demand support, their success would be more difficult and time-consuming. I digress... This reflects my current experience as the only minority on my team, striving for higher pay, job security, and a stable environment where compensation matches top job performance over the past decade, yet my pay remains significantly lower than my teammates'. Where does the fight for equality begin and end?
Reflecting on My Dream
Like Martin Luther King Jr., I have a dream that calls me to step into the unknown and unlock my full potential. This dream is a testament to resilience, courage, and the undeniable strength of community.
As I navigate this journey, I remember that, just as Dr. King shifted the narrative of his time, I can shape my future. Each day brings opportunities to act on my aspirations, reminding me that the path may not always be smooth, but every step taken is a victory.
As you ponder your own dreams, remember that you too can dream boldly and create change in the world. Honor your unique journey, lift your voice, and let your dreams soar high!
Let's start with the conversation and end with great results and turn our dreams into action a path to racial equality in healthcare, community and most importantly in the workplace. Let's end racism in our lifetime.
